Why I Created Little Roamers (And How a 17 Hour Flight Started It All)
Little Roamers didn’t start because I wanted a business. It started because we have a very long flight coming up.
A 17 hour flight, to be exact.
When we travek, I will have a two year old and a four year old, and while screens were always going to be part of the plan, I didn’t want them glued to iPads for the entire journey. I wanted something to break up the screen time without turning into chaos.
I also didn’t want to buy a bunch of one use activities that would end up in the bin or forgotten in a hotel room overseas.
What I was looking for but couldn’t find
I wanted something that was:
- Engaging but not overstimulating
- Reusable so I wasn’t constantly buying more
- Easy to pack and carry on a plane
- Calm enough for a long haul flight
- And ideally not terrible for the environment
But everything I found felt like a compromise. Either it was loud and plastic, single use and wasteful, or just not very practical for travel.
I wanted one simple solution that actually worked.
The original idea
The idea was simple. One activity bag that could keep my kids entertained on a long flight without relying solely on screens.
Reusable activities. Thoughtfully chosen. Easy to pull out, pack away, and reuse again and again.
Something I could pack once and use throughout our trip without needing to buy more things while we were away.
That was it. That was the whole plan.
What I didn’t expect
Once we started trialling the bags, something unexpected happened.
We kept reaching for them. Not just for the flight.
We used them when we went out for dinner. In waiting rooms. In the car on road trips. In cafés while having a coffee. In those moments where you don’t plan to need anything, but suddenly you really do.
The bag became something we just threw in the car and had ready.
It wasn’t just for travel anymore. It was for everyday life.
Why reusability matters to me
I didn’t want Little Roamers to be another product that added to waste.
Reusable activities mean:
- Less throwing things away
- Less buying replacements
- Less clutter
- More value over time
It also means kids can come back to the same activities again and again, which is often where the magic happens.
What Little Roamers has become
Little Roamers is now that bag we always have on hand.
For planned trips. For unexpected moments. For long flights and short outings.
It’s not about keeping kids busy every second. It’s about having something ready when you need it.
Something calm. Practical. Reusable. And genuinely helpful.
