Screen Free Travel With Kids: How We Actually Get Through Flights, Cafés and Road Trips
If you’ve ever packed up the kids to leave the house and already felt exhausted before you even got there, you’re not alone.
Travelling with kids, or even just heading out for a coffee, can feel like a military operation. And most of the time, screens feel like the easiest option. Sometimes they are. Sometimes they absolutely are not.
I’ve learned the hard way that screens can fix a moment, but they don’t always make the experience better.
Why screens don’t always make things easier
There’s no judgement here. We all use screens at times. But what I kept noticing was:
- Bigger meltdowns once the screen was taken away
- Kids zoning out rather than settling
- More restlessness, not less
- That wired feeling that made everything harder afterwards
What my kids actually needed wasn’t more stimulation. They needed something calming that kept their hands busy and their minds focused.
What screen free travel really looks like
Screen free doesn’t mean sitting still or behaving perfectly. It means giving kids something familiar and engaging that they can come back to when boredom hits.
The activities that work best are:
- Simple and reusable
- Easy to grab without help
- Familiar enough that kids don’t need explaining
- Calm, not noisy or overwhelming
This is what helps kids settle in new environments.
One bag changes everything
I used to overpack. Multiple bags, loose toys, things rolling under café tables or car seats.
What worked better was one dedicated activity bag.
One bag that:
- Comes everywhere
- Lives packed and ready
- Fits under a plane seat or next to a café chair
- Holds everything kids need without being bulky
Sticker books, drawing activities, quiet games. Nothing flashy. Just things that actually get used.
How this plays out in real life
On flights, the bag comes out as soon as we sit down. No scrambling, no asking for screens straight away.
At cafés, it sits on the table and buys us time. Time to eat. Time to talk. Time to actually enjoy being out.
On road trips, activities can be rotated without drama or stopping every five minutes.
Why Little Roamers exists
Little Roamers was created because I wanted something simple and calm that didn’t exist yet.
One bag. Thoughtfully chosen activities. No screens required.
Not to be perfect parents. Just to make everyday outings and travel feel easier.
